Good typography is essential for a great user experience—no matter whether it’s in a printed book or on a digital user interface. This class will cover the foundations of typography and explore the ingredients for an optimal digital reading experience. We will focus on the skills a designer needs to exploit the typographic possibilities of digital platforms. We will discuss typographic details in contemporary app and web design, how to parse and work with text, how to pick and combine typefaces and how use fonts in digital products. Basic knowledge of web development (HTML/CSS) is required. Maximum of 16 students. For admission to this class, you must come to the first lecture and present homework the following week. The first lecture is on Friday, October 23, 2015, 10:00–14:00 h. Lectures will be in English if international students join the class, otherwise in German.
