Visualizing Sustainability Models

nur für Incom-Mitglieder

Planning the city of the future is no trivial task. Cities are complex systems, where a wide variety of human and non-human actors interact and a broad spectrum of variables are at play. To tackle this complexity, scientists and experts create models, simplified representations of real cities, to visualize or predict the development of the urban fabric. Models are powerful tools in urban planning, but are oftentimes difficult to understand as they bring into play and combine several variables and contingencies to offer simplified indices and numbers to describe intricate phenomena. The result can seem abstruse to citizens and lay audiences outside of the scientific domain. Yet, models are vital tools to create a shared understanding and consensus over complicated city-related issues.

Digital storytelling and data visualization are two key methods to tackle this complexity. In this course, we will work in interdisciplinary settings with real case studies and data originating from sustainability models. The goal will be to create web-based prototypes that offer clear overviews and demonstrations of how these models work.

The course is open to master students from Interface and Communication Design, Architecture, and Urban Futures. Basic coding experience (Front-end or Full-stack) is advised.

Please note: The class will be taught in English. All communication during the seminars as well as literature and auxiliary materials will be in English.
