Closing thousand push notifications, stopping to doom-scroll through our feeds, patiently going through all the newsletters in our inbox to find the unsubscribe button… All this, to find ourselves tricked again and again in the same behavior. Interfaces rule the way we interact with the digital world. They support some of our decisions and hinder others. They reward or punish us. All in the name of logic we do not control. This is the dark side of interface and user experience design. How are we nudged to make certain decisions? Which visual and interaction elements enable deceptive patterns? In this course, we will learn to register and critically discuss deceptive interface elements and patterns. We will take interfaces, un-design them, and put them back together to contextualize their influence on us, users. With the help of critical design, speculative interface design, and creative coding we will produce interactive essays that expose the issues of current commercial UI/UX practices.
