In this second part of the Collaborative Project, we focus on applying principles of Design Theory and Design Research to real-world, often overlooked public spaces: supermarkets, parking garages, elevators, bus stops, rest areas, and train stations. These are spaces of transit, waiting, and function—rarely perceived as intentionally designed environments.
Building on the theoretical frameworks introduced earlier in the course, we approach these spaces through sensory, conceptual, and design-oriented research methods. Using design research methods, we aim to make the invisible visible. Through careful analysis, documentation, and interpretation, students develop design positions informed by both theory and observation.
Outcomes may range from analytical studies to experimental interventions. The choice of media is open and guided by the concept and the insights gained through research. This part of the course emphasizes the integration of theory and research into practical design exploration, fostering reflective and conceptually informed design practices.
As mentioned in the studio description, these are the special features of the course:
1. Collaboration with Prof. Susanne Stahl and students from the BA Graphic and Media Design, London College of Communication
This project is part of a collaboration with Editorial Design (Prof. Susanne Stahl) and the London College of Communication (LCC). The theory and research seminar must be attended in parallel and will alternate with the design studio course on Wednesdays. Students will receive one credit for the design studio and an additional credit for the theory seminar. Enrollment in the theory seminar will be arranged by us after successful registration in this course (from 14 October).
2. Excursion to London — 9 to 13 February 2026
During the week of 9–13 February 2026, we will travel to London and work on-site with design students from LCC on joint spatial investigations. The specific location of the study will be announced later.
Accommodation costs will be covered (subject to confirmation).
Travel expenses must be borne by participants.
Participation in the trip is mandatory for all project participants.
IMPORTANT: This is only an associated workspace, used solely for the purpose of credit issuance.
