In this class, we will use speculative design methods for identifying potential legal issues and social conflicts that will arise from the use of emerging digital technology in public spaces. The starting point for our design explorations is the observation that physical and digital spaces are increasingly overlapping and merging into a „phygital space“. This could have profound impacts, both positive and negative, on human perception, social interaction and political governance. Already the combination of smart city technologies with the ubiquity of personal digital devices such as smartphones raises a number of legal issues such as technology regulation or data sovereignty. To approach this problem space, we will collaborate closely with legal experts, politicians and NGOs. The class aims to develop design visions that enable legal and political discourse around possible phygital futures. It is is part of the research project IPPSO („Transdisciplinary Legal, Public Policy, and Design Research on Immersive Phygital Public Spaces in Smart Cities“), which is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. The project consortium consists of the UCLAB of the FHP, the Bezalel Academy for Arts and Design in Jerusalem and the Israel Democracy Institute. The class will be taught in English.
