In this course, we will ask to what extent design can be used as a tactic for instigating transformative changes and shifting societal norms. Focusing on the triple environmental crises (climate, pollution and biodiversity) the course will examine why the majority of things we make and consume are still being produced by outdated, linear, extractive systems that have a negative impact on people and planet and why these modes of operating continue to dominate design practice.
Together we will look at theories of change, when and how to intervene in systems to create shifts in norms and what the barriers and blockers can be. Students will be tasked with a thought-provoking semester-long 'intervention design' project, aiming to transform a particular system. Your challenge will be to select a previously redesigned consumer product or service that attempted to respond to environmental challenges but failed. By understanding the reasons for its failure and looking for the right intervention points, you will develop a project that has the potential to transform the way a particular product or service is created and consumed in the future. Your design approach can encompass various strategies, from communication to product design, and will be focused on potential for impact. Through collaborative exploration, we will uncover the potential influence of design and its limitations and reflect on the role you can play in the future as a designer operating within much larger systems.
