Abstract English

Adaptation is a fundamental part of the migration experience, influencing identity, belonging, and self-perception. While migration is often explored through external changes such as language barriers and cultural differences, this project focuses on the internal emotional process of adaptation. The master’s thesis investigates how design—particularly through picture books—can visually narrate this process, using color progression, composition, and typography to convey transformation.

The project consists of a picture book that tells the story of Harper, a child navigating a new environment. Harper’s emotional journey is depicted through visual storytelling techniques, such as a shifting color palette that reflects their evolving sense of belonging. The book intentionally avoids explicit migration narratives, instead opting for a universal approach to adaptation, allowing readers from diverse backgrounds to relate to the experience.

The research integrates insights from migration studies, identity theory, and transculturalism to inform the visual and narrative structure of the book. By analyzing existing migration narratives in picture books, the project identifies how different artistic approaches shape the reader’s understanding of adaptation. The practical component combines analogue and digital illustration techniques, ensuring that the final design remains expressive and emotionally resonant.

This master’s thesis contributes to discussions on migration representation in picture books, offering an alternative approach that emphasizes emotional transformation over explicit storytelling. It highlights the potential of visual storytelling in fostering empathy and understanding, demonstrating how picture books can serve as a medium for complex themes of identity, adaptation, and belonging.

Anpassung ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der Migrationserfahrung und beeinflusst Identität, Zugehörigkeit und Selbstwahrnehmung. Während Migration oft durch äußere Veränderungen wie Sprachbarrieren und kulturelle Unterschiede betrachtet wird, konzentriert sich diese Arbeit auf den inneren emotionalen Prozess der Anpassung. Die Masterarbeit untersucht, wie Design – insbesondere durch Bilderbücher – diesen Prozess visuell erzählen kann, indem Farbverläufe, Komposition und Typografie genutzt werden, um Transformation darzustellen.

Das Projekt umfasst ein Bilderbuch, das die Geschichte von Harper erzählt, einem Kind, das sich in einer neuen Umgebung zurechtfindet. Harpers emotionale Reise wird durch visuelle Erzähltechniken dargestellt, beispielsweise durch eine sich verändernde Farbpalette, die ihr wachsendes Zugehörigkeitsgefühl widerspiegelt. Das Buch verzichtet bewusst auf eine explizite Migrationsgeschichte und verfolgt stattdessen einen universellen Ansatz zur Darstellung von Anpassung, sodass sich Leser:innen mit unterschiedlichen Hintergründen mit der Erfahrung identifizieren können.

Die Forschung integriert Erkenntnisse aus Migrationsstudien, Identitätstheorie und Transkulturalität, um die visuelle und narrative Struktur des Buches zu gestalten. Durch die Analyse bestehender Migrationsdarstellungen in Bilderbüchern identifiziert das Projekt verschiedene künstlerische Ansätze zur Vermittlung von Anpassungsprozessen. Die praktische Umsetzung kombiniert analoge und digitale Illustrationstechniken, um eine ausdrucksstarke und emotionale Bildsprache zu gewährleisten.

Diese Masterarbeit leistet einen Beitrag zur Diskussion über die Darstellung von Migration in Bilderbüchern und bietet eine alternative Herangehensweise, die emotionale Transformation anstelle expliziter Erzählstrukturen in den Fokus rückt. Sie zeigt, wie visuelles Erzählen Empathie und Verständnis fördern kann und dass Bilderbücher ein wirksames Medium für komplexe Themen wie Identität, Anpassung und Zugehörigkeit sein können.
