Abstract English

There have never been more typefaces than today. While in the days of letterpress and phototypesetting the discipline of making type was reserved to a small circle of designers , the necessary tools are now available to a wide range of people. At Potsdam University of Applied Sciences, typedesign has also been an inherent part of the communication design programme for more than 20 years.

This paper deals with the development of a platform for typedesign by students at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences.

First, a historical overview of the development of type design as we know it today is given. This is followed by research and analysis of comparable projects at other universities. Based on these observations, concept and design of ABC FHP is presented and decisions are described and justified. Subsequently, the take-aways from the process are summed up and theoretically thought further. Finally, I will reflect on networking, open platforms, my role as a curator and designer and the outlook on a possible continuation of the project.
