Disrupted Truth

We move towards a more and more digital society and the digital evolution occurs rapidly. Some theories even say that we might live in a computer simulation.

Do we really exist in the way we think we are, or are we in a computer simulation without knowing it?

How could that reveal itself?

Example: If a tv or computer game bugs in any way, so do the characters in it. But the characters can’t notice these bugs because they are a part of the game/simulation and therefore a part of the bugs.

What if something similar is happening in our reality without us noticing it?

How could that reveal itself?

Using spray cans and sheets of papers we did an experiment in class that was supposed to be related to our concept. I played with the question „Do we exist?“ and I also used thin, cut outed lines to get a glitchy feeling/impression. See pictures

To continue the process on my concept I tried different visual expressions, including the one shown on these pictures. But I did not think that this aesthetic matched my view on how I wanted the project to look like, so I rejected it.

Anyway, my thought here was to take a more abstract approach on the project, but I realised I don't want to keep it too abstract.

Mini experiment

I had some red plastic sheets at home and decided to make a quick mini experiment with it using a red marker. One of the simulation theories is that nothing exists when we do not see it, so I played with that thought.

Here are my first concrete examples on which way I want to direct my concept. I still want to integrate the simulation theory saying that nothing exists when we do not look at it/see it. This is also linked to another theory I have brought to the concept: The theories behind the double slit experiment. It is rather complicated to explain (see movie clip about this in links) but it says basically: The mere act of observation can completely change the outcome of an event. For example: When a camera observes electrons, they are acting as particles. However, when the no equipment was used to observe the electrons, they acted as waves and particles simultaneously.

Does the electrons somehow know that they are being watched? That is the only “logical” reason scientists could come up with so far.

On the posters above I played with the thought that there might not exist a reality, at least not the way we think it is. That we are in this computer simulation without knowing it. That everything we see do not really exist. But it is here for our eyes to see.

The media I have decided to use for my project will be animated GIF's because I think that is well fitted with my concept about computer simulations. I want to mix a digital feeling with our perception of the reality. Here are my first try on that. To be seen as an experiment so far.

Feedback

In class I received the feedback that I should use questions or question formulations in my GIF's to meet the observer. Otherwise the observer might not want to take in what I am trying to mediate.

I also got the feedback that I should use a theme in my GIF's so that they become more coherent. The theme could for example be plants.

First I did a series of four complex gif's. I used a plant as a recurring object, and it also works as a character that I use to make the simulation theories more concrete. Here are snapshots of the four gif's. Please look further down for the actual gif's.

Feed back I got in class when I showed these gif's was that it would be an interesting project if I made a lot of them. At least one hundred! I was also told to not make the gif's so complex.

Final result

Next step in my project was to produce lots and lots of gif's. It was obvious for me to have a digital medium for my gif's so chose Instagram as the platform. This to give more meaning to them. So I made 100 gif's and put them out on Instagram. On @disrupted_truth you can see the final result.
