Throughout the Type + Screen course, I have explored various aspects of typography specifically tailored for digital media.
In an initial exercise, we explored the pixel representation of letters, translating them into a 16x16 grid, working in an analog format.
We digitized our letters from the first exercise using fontstruct and added additional letters to form words, creating our monospaced font.
I created a sans-serif font, it stands out for its square shape, bold appearance, and slightly extended characters. The thick lines give the font a strong and assertive look, perfect for drawing attention. The slightly widened characters provide enhanced readability and a distinctive touch, making it ideal for headlines, logos, and text that need to stand out with a nostalgic yet modern feel.
We looked for engaging typographical content across various websites. After identifying this content, we created a sentence by taking screenshots of the selected text snippets.
The goal was to analyze the various graphic styles used on web platforms, with a particular focus on the use of white space and the spacing between letters.
For this exercise, we chose a scene of a movie and created a typographic subtitle story based on that, using typography as the only visual language.
I chose the movie „Whisper of the Heart“ (1995) by Yoshifumi Kondō. The font I used is Cirka (Pangram Pangram) designed by Nick Losacco. This serif font is an excellent choice for a romantic movie. Its pointed features and diamond-shaped dots complement the film's theme of unpolished stones, symbolizing the rough yet beautiful nature of love.
The dialogue is between two characters, Shirou and Shizuku, but it's mainly Shirou's lines. I used the bold weight for Shirou's lines and the light weight for Shizuku's. To highlight some lines of the dialogue, I used the uppercase instead of the lowercase.
As part of the interim presentation on May 14th, we were required to insert our previous results into a template and present them.
For this exercise, we were tasked with selecting a website and conducting a thorough analysis of its typography. This analysis includes examining the fonts used, their application, and the overall impact on the website's design and user experience.
Then we had to write an article on the website fontsinuse about the analysis we made.
For the last exercise, we were required to select a movie, find its script, and transform it into a typographic screenplay website, using Figma.
I chose the movie „Past Lives“ (2023) by Celine Song. The fonts I used are IBM Plex Sans KR (IBM) designed by by Mike Abbink and Bold Monday, and HAL Four Grotesk (HAL Typefaces) designed by Studio HanLi.
