Iranian Women - Resilience Across Eras

In the 20th century, Iranian women faced formidable challenges, particularly during the Pahlavi era, marked by societal shifts driven by influential figures advocating for change.

The 1979 Revolution ushered in a more challenging phase, severely restricting Iranian women's rights, daily social life freedom and exacerbating existing hardships. Despite these setbacks, Iranian women of all ages and backgrounds never stopped fighting and advocating for their rights, navigating a non-linear narrative of interconnected struggles and triumphs within Iran's complex socio-political landscape during this transformative period.

PROJECT

Our project delves into the condition of women in Iran today, understanding it as the result of a succession of interconnected political and cultural/religious events and changes over the decades. To provide a comprehensive context, an Iranian history timeline, starting from the 50s/60s, serves as the foundation for the main narrative of our project.

At the heart of this narrative is a female protagonist, Soheila, who shares her personal journey as an Iranian woman, illustrating how her life has evolved through the years. Her story is intricately intertwined with the broader historical, cultural, and social events that have shaped the landscape of Iran. By exploring her experiences, we aim to shed light on the entangled factors that have influenced and continue to influence the condition of women in Iran, offering a nuanced understanding of their struggles and triumphs in the face of evolving political and societal dynamics.

DESIGN PROCESS

In the initial phase of our project, we meticulously divided our timeline into distinct segments: The Pahlavi Monarchy, The Iranian Revolution, and the current period (2020s). Each team member took on the responsibility of conducting thorough research on their assigned topic and crafted entanglements that intricately reflect the nuances of each respective era.

This approach ensures a thorough exploration of each era while allowing us to draw meaningful connections between the past and the present.

The Pahlavi Monarchy section focuses on the societal shifts during this period, with a particular emphasis on how life looked like for a normal girl growing up in 60s/70s Tehran. Influential figures (Reza Shah Pahlavi I and Mohammed Reza Pahlavi II) advocating for change played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape, setting the stage for the subsequent transformations.

Moving forward on the timeline, the Iranian Revolution segment delves into the aftermath of 1979 and the oppressive atmosphere that began to stain Iran, highlighting the political and social struggles that Iranian people had to face and in particular the severe restrictions imposed on Iranian women's rights.

In the third segment, representing the current time in the 2020s, our research encapsulates the evolution of the condition of women in Iran. We explore the ongoing impact of historical, cultural, and political events on the lives of Iranian women today, offering a contemporary perspective on the entangled factors that continue to shape their experiences.

By dividing the timeline into these focused segments that give a concise but clear account of the main events in Iranian history from the 1960s to the present day, we hope to have created a comprehensive and informative narrative. At the same time our aim was not only to create an informative project, but also one that tells an interesting and touching story through the videos we produced using narration and images of Soheila's life, who provides us with her valuable personal experience and testimony.
