It’s 2019 and “being gay is ok”. But is it really?
According to a report published by the International Lesbian, Gay, Biseuxal, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA), as per march 2019, 70 entities continue to criminalise same-sex consensual activity. In 44 of these entities the law is applied to people that impose the death penalty on consensual same-sex sexual acts, and a further five states where such a punishment is technically possible. In 26 other countries the maximum penalty can vary between 10 years to life imprisonment.
The context in which we are born and raised will define the level of struggle of one’s coming out, both as a personal discovery and a public announcement.
This project invites the viewer to dive into a landscape of emotions that tell a personal story of a coming out. From discovering ones identity, and experiencing the fear that comes with it, to sailing on a never ending journey that at times can seem overwhelming, to then look back and smile in peace owning ones new identity with pride. And thinking with frustration and solidarity that for a lot of people around the world this is still a dream suppressed by the society they live in.
In an ideal context people would be born without a stamp on their forehead: straight until proven otherwise. In an ideal world, coming out wouldn’t be a thing, instead it would just be a matter of identity.
