The project is a redesign of the Chinese food tracking app “吃多少” for the GNOME ecosystem. The original app has a relatively complex structure and many different functions. I focused on redesigning several key features, including recording nutritional information, adjusting food values, and adding custom content.
Process
The main changes were related to the visual style. I replaced the original bright and colorful visual language with a simpler color system based on the key colors of GNOME. I also simplified the more complex interfaces to make them clearer and easier to use. Other details I worked on included the font size for Chinese text and the usability of buttons and other interactive elements.
English Version
I also created an English version of the interface. This allowed me to compare the two languages and explore how different writing systems influence interface design, particularly in the sidebar section.
Prototype
The prototype allows users to view an overview of their food intake during the week and check their daily nutritional information. Users can adjust their personal body information to calculate and adjust their recommended daily calorie intake.
They can select a specific date to view their food records and adjust the nutritional values of food that has already been recorded.
If a food item is not available in the existing list, users can add a custom entry by entering the food name, calories, protein, carbohydrates, and fat.
For food items that are already available in the list, users only need to adjust the serving size before adding them to their daily record.
Reflection
By redesigning an existing Chinese app for GNOME, I was able to think about how the same functions can be adapted to a different design system and platform.
Working with both Chinese and English also helped me understand how language can influence interface structure and visual composition.
ChiLog is a small exploration of how an existing mobile app can be redesigned for a new platform, design system, and language context.
