Abstract English
The objective of this thesis is to investigate the potential of a virtual production control room for the film and television industry and the associated challenges and opportunities. The focus is on the development of an extended reality (XR) control concept as an alternative to conventional vision mixers and monitors. Although some approaches already exist, e.g. to control audio software via a virtual reality (VR) headset, there is still a lack of comparable solutions in the video and broadcast sector. Virtual news studios and computer-generated environments using real-time rendering and augmented reality (AR) have long been an integral part of modern TV and film productions. Even viewers can now experience sporting events and concerts from the comfort of their own homes using a VR headset. It is therefore remarkable that immersive technologies have so far been understood primarily as a medium and less as a tool for actual content creation. The objective of this thesis is to ascertain whether existing processes in vision mixing can be transformed and optimized by integrating XR technologies instead of redefining them from scratch. The focus is on the practical applicability and benefits of XR in this specific context.
