In our project we decided to focus on unpacking biased language around disability, specifically in the German language.
“Behindert”, the German word for disabled, is one of the most commonly used schoolyard insults we grow up with, and its derogatory usage often continues into adulthood. Yet when speaking with or about actual disabled people, most people don’t know what to say.

First layer – WHAT DO YOU SAY?
The person has to choose one of four options
how they would speak about a disabled person.
*
Second layer – WHAT DO YOU THINK?
On each field is a common assumption about disabled people to choose from.
*
Third layer – Thought-provoking clarification
In the final layer the person is given a thought prompt on whatever assumption they chose beforehand which will help them reflect about their previous way of thinking.
